In the world of picture books, most villains are such comic buffoons that you really can’t take them seriously.  Thus justice is served up lightly, if at all.  Or the scoundrels “see the light” and become reformed characters.

Not this time.

Jon Klassen takes the gloves off.  This little fish is a thief without scruples; and justice is coming.  It’s no wonder Klassen landed a well deserved Caldecott Medal for this effort.

The Snowy Day

Long before it was trendy to write about African Americans, Ezra Jack Keats wrote an entire stack of such books.  The Snowy Day really was the the Jackie Robinson of picture books: shattering the racial barrier in the mainstream market.

I’ve read this beautiful poetic tale to my children so many times that I have it memorized.
