On the Day His Daddy Left

I was about a month into student teaching when a boy rushed into class, ran up to his friend and excitedly belted out these lines. I was dumbfounded and completely unprepared… not for the last time.

Divorce, separation and short term parents/boyfriends/girlfriends are just part of the cultural backdrop to which teaching occurs. When someone leaves, it’s common for the child to wonder if they are to blame.

It’s not their fault; and this story was written to tell them just that.
