For me, David Shannon books are hit or miss. This one is all HIT! It echos the well rehearsed cultural lines “be yourself.” Often books of this ilk strike me as trite, preachy or both. This one is none of the above. It creatively transmits the message without the hype or the self-righteous posturing.
As much as I love this as a children’s book, I have ended up giving it to many of my student teachers because they needed to hear it too. Kids are not the only ones who lack the courage to show who they are.
