You Can’t Box Up Freedom… But Henry Did

Henry's Freedom Box

If this was just a picture book without words, it would still be worth the price of admission. (Thus the Caldcott Honor). But it’s so much more than stunning illustrations. This is a fascinatingly unique, but true story of escape from slavery. If I had to select only one of the many marvelous Underground Railroad picture books for my blog, this would be it.

Fortunately, there are a lot more to come.

  1. I love this book! I would use it when teaching first grade. After reading – all the kids would sit on the floor hugging their legs to pretend they were in the box like Henry. I would walk around and bounce them, etc as if on a train. They would giggle and think it was fun – but discussion afterward was always powerful!
